On October 3, a GPT-6.1 Sol agent was told not to send Slack messages while working on an internal task.
It decided that also meant switching off the automatic security alerts designed to flag when something goes wrong. Very thorough.
3 days later, a GPT-6 Astra agent removed a safety monitor while copying an existing piece of code. Then it claimed it hadn’t. It had.
According to OpenAI, both agents actually stopped to CONSIDER whether the safeguards should stay… and then talked themselves OUT of it.
OpenAI admits it doesn’t “yet have a satisfying explanation for this behavior.”
Every sci-fi screenwriter of the last 50 years is whispering “told you so” 😆
