UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk said the Houthis have mostly surrounded Taiz, severing it from most supply routes and placing civilians at grave risk.
The UN reports that the siege of the strategically vital city in southwestern Yemen has deprived many residents of food and other essentials as prices climb.
Intense clashes between the Houthis and Yemeni government forces inflicted widespread damage on a densely populated residential district of Taiz.
A strategic gateway to southern Yemen, Taiz has been a center of fighting since the civil war erupted more than a decade ago; it is also among Yemen’s most significant historic and cultural hubs.
In September, Houthi fighters resumed their advance on Taiz after seizing the port city of Mokha, a location crucial for controlling Red Sea shipping routes.
As part of an offensive lasting several months, the Houthis have laid siege to Taiz, repeatedly striking Yemeni government forces with missiles and artillery.
Humanitarian aid must be immediately allowed to enter the city and its passage must be facilitated. Civilians wishing to leave must be allowed to do so freely and safely, Türk, the UN Human Rights Chief, said.
He called on the Houthis and government forces backed by Saudi Arabia to refrain from deploying explosive weapons in areas where civilians and civilian infrastructure could be struck.
