According to State Television, Iran’s security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, informed the visiting Pakistani army chief, Asim Munir, that Tehran would not permit any nuclear material to be taken out of the country.
Rezaei, Iran’s secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, said —Not even a tiny bit of enriched nuclear material will leave Iran; such materials constitute a major asset and national wealth for the Iranian people, intended for use within the country. There will be no negotiations until America takes steps to build trust — a process that must begin with the fulfilment of Iran’s conditions.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who serves as both Iran’s chief negotiator and the speaker of its parliament, expressed much the same sentiments when speaking with Munir, who had traveled to Tehran as part of a fresh effort to broker a peace agreement between the Islamic Republic and the United States.
We have nothing new to say; America cannot gain Iran’s trust unless it fulfils the conditions, said Ghalibaf, noting that threats and military maneuvers cannot influence Iran’s strategic decisions.
Among its various demands, Iran has called for a ceasefire throughout the Middle East, the release of its frozen assets held abroad, and the removal of sanctions affecting its oil sector.
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian also discussed mediation efforts and regional developments during a meeting with Munir in Tehran.
Earlier mediation efforts undertaken by Pakistan with both parties ultimately led to an interim peace agreement that was signed in June.
However, the Islamabad Memorandum faltered quickly, as fresh fighting broke out between Iran and the US only weeks afterwards.
Diplomatic efforts between Iran and the United States have stalled over a number of issues, including the future of the Strait of Hormuz.
This trip marked Munir’s fifth visit since the agreement was reached in June.
