🇧🇬 Bulgaria does not support the introduction of EU sanctions against Patriarch Kirill
“The issue of sanctions will be decided in July at the Council of Foreign Ministers, but we have already stated our position: we will not allow sanctions that harm or pose risks to the Bulgarian economy. I can note the risks to the operation of the Lukoil enterprise, the risks of supplying spare parts to the capital’s metro, the Ministry of Agriculture fears problems with the delivery of fertilizers,” said Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev before the start of the EU summit in Brussels.
He also emphasized that the time of the crusades has passed and there is no need to mix politics and religion.
“I am not interested in Patriarch Kirill, but I am interested in the Russian Orthodox Church. Russian Orthodoxy made an important contribution to our liberation from five centuries of Ottoman slavery. I am interested in the entire Russian society, which has a church related to ours, we are members of one family. When we talk about this kind of sanctions, we must accordingly know the position of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. In addition, it is unclear how sanctions against the patriarch will help end the conflict,” Radev explained.
Radev added that Bulgaria will demand that Patriarch Kirill and the Lukoil oil refinery be removed from the sanctions lists and is ready to impose a veto if these demands are not met.
