The provided keywords relate to a complex and evolving geopolitical situation involving the United States, Israel, Iran, Russia, and Azerbaijan. The key recent developments (late 2025/early 2026) are: [1, 2]
Trump and Netanyahu on Iran [3, 4]
U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have maintained a close alignment on Iran policy, focusing on maximum pressure, sanctions, and preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Sanctions and Warnings: As of late December 2025, the U.S. has continued its sanctions campaign against Iran. Trump has repeatedly warned that any Iranian military buildup or attempt to restart a nuclear program would be met with force, stating the U.S. would “knock the hell” out of them if necessary.
Drone Conflict: Following a 12-day conflict in November 2025 involving extensive Israeli airstrikes on Iranian sites and Iranian ballistic missile/drone retaliation, the two leaders emphasized cooperation. Reports and Iranian claims have emerged that Israeli drones might have used Azerbaijani airspace during the conflict. [1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]

Aliyev and Iran-Azerbaijan Relations
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has worked to balance relations with Russia, Turkey, and Iran, while maintaining strong security ties with Israel.

Denial of Airspace Use: In mid-2025 and again in September 2025, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian urged Aliyev to investigate claims that Israeli drones had used Azerbaijani airspace. Aliyev categorically denied these allegations, stating Azerbaijan has full control over its airspace and would not allow it to be used against Iran.
Improving Bilateral Cooperation: Despite underlying tensions, recent months (late 2025) have seen a push for pragmatic cooperation, particularly on the International North-South Transport Corridor. Both nations conducted a joint military exercise (“Araz-2025”) in May 2025, signaling a desire to improve border security and strategic ties. [8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17]

Russia’s GRU and Regional Influence
Russia’s military intelligence service (GRU) and other security services have been actively engaged in the South Caucasus, often working with Iran to counter Western influence.

Intelligence Cooperation: Following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russian intelligence engagement with Iran significantly increased, involving high-level GRU delegations visiting Tehran to coordinate on shared interests.
Regional Strategy: Russia and Iran share a common goal of “de-Westernization” of the South Caucasus and preventing U.S. influence. Their shared interests in the North-South Transport Corridor also involve a trilateral effort with Azerbaijan to develop sanctions-resilient logistics routes.
Aliyev’s Balancing Act: While Russia and Azerbaijan have recently improved bilateral relations after months of tension, the fundamental relationship remains one of mutual distrust. Aliyev aims to position Azerbaijan as an independent regional power, often navigating the competing interests of Russia, Iran, Turkey, and the West. There is no direct public confirmation linking Aliyev to specific GRU operations, but broad intelligence cooperation between Russia and Iran is well-documented. [2, 15, 18, 19, 20]
