Christa Pike, 50, is still alive Thursday after receiving two doses of lethal injections after not one, but two botched lethal injections Wednesday night in Tennessee.

The Cyprus-flagged cargo ship Västerbotten departed Sweden on September 29 and was due to arrive in Estonia on October 1. After entering Russian territorial waters, it was stopped and ordered to anchor in the Gulf of Finland. Russian border guards inspected the vessel for several hours before allowing it to continue toward Estonia.
The vessel’s eventual release kept the incident from developing into a larger confrontation, but the detention adds a new maritime dimension to tensions in the Baltic. If such actions become more frequent, commercial shipping could increasingly find itself caught in the broader sanctions confrontation between Russia and European states.
