Merz described Moscow’s escalation as a sign of desperation amid the war in Ukraine. At the same time, Vladimir Putin warned that escalating confrontation with the West could reach a “fatal point of no return,” while again denying that Russia plans to attack European countries. Moscow has also rejected Western accusations that it is conducting hybrid attacks across Europe.

The statements show how sharply the confrontation has intensified beyond the battlefield in Ukraine. Berlin is preparing for more pressure below the threshold of conventional war, while Moscow is simultaneously warning that continued escalation could eventually become irreversible.

Civil lawsuit prompts renewed criminal scrutiny in Cornell gang rape case


An anonymous Cornell University student who reported sexual assault at a fraternity house in 2024 is now at the center of a reopened criminal investigation after filing a civil lawsuit.

The student alleged she was sexually assaulted on Oct. 19, 2024, after using alcohol and ketamine at a fraternity house. She reported the incident to Cornell University Police on Nov. 8, 2024. Campus police investigated and forwarded her statement to the Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office.

The district attorney declined to bring charges, stating consent laws were not broken. On Sept. 16, the accuser filed a civil lawsuit alleging she had been incapacitated and gang raped.

New York criminal law attorney Jonna Spilbor told The National News Desk the criminal and civil matters are “two totally separate tracks,” but said they are now likely to overlap because the district attorney has reopened the investigation and intends to present the case to a grand jury.

Spilbor said the grand jury could return a “true bill,” which could lead to criminal charges against “these seven or some of them, maybe not all, maybe some of these seven young men named in this civil complaint,” or the grand jury could decline to indict and the district attorney’s original decision not to file charges “may stand.”

Spilbor also said the time gap could pose challenges, including questions about memory and credibility.

She said it is common for campus police to be the first agency involved in such cases and to refer matters to local authorities or the district attorney, who ultimately decides whether charges will be filed. Spilbor said the district attorney reviewed the case two years ago and decided there was “no criminality” under consent laws, and is now taking a second look.
