Victim’s family speaks out after Christa Pike survives 2 lethal injections in failed execution

The family of a woman murdered by Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike is speaking out after Pike survived the state’s attempt to execute her by lethal injection.

Pike, 50, received two doses of the lethal drug pentobarbital Wednesday night but remained alive. Witnesses said Pike continued breathing and could be heard snoring more than an hour after the execution process began. She was eventually taken by ambulance to a hospital, where her attorneys said Thursday she was in critical condition and receiving life-saving medical care.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Pike was 18 at the time of the killing.

Members of Slemmer’s family witnessed Wednesday’s attempted execution after waiting three decades for Pike’s sentence to be carried out.

Slemmer’s family said the failed execution has brought more frustration and uncertainty instead of the closure they had hoped for. Family members urged people discussing the failed execution to remember Slemmer and the crime that led to Pike’s death sentence.

The Tennessee Department of Correction said it followed every step of the state’s established execution protocol, but the protocol did not allow officials to take additional steps after the two doses failed to kill Pike.

Pike’s attorneys have sharply criticized the execution attempt, describing it as cruel and torturous and arguing that complications had been foreseeable.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced Thursday that he had ordered a comprehensive third-party review to determine what went wrong.
“Carrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the State’s most serious responsibilities, and the people of Tennessee expect it to be done in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional, but is effective,” Lee said.

NY Governor REMOVES DA in Alleged “CORNELL 7” Gang Rape case, appoints Letitia James to take over

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has removed the DA in the Cornell rape allegation case, and has appointed a special prosecutor to oversee the investigation into a woman’s allegations that she was gang raped at a fraternity house back in 2024. This, as the University has agreed to an independent probe into how it handled those allegations, in which no one was charged, the Tompkins County DA revealing that while he found the allegations “morally disturbing,” the facts at the time did not support prosecution. With more on the case, the loopholes in the state’s intoxication laws, and what it all reveals about Title IX, Sandra Mitchell and Micah Ohlman are joined by KTLA Law and Politics Analyst Jessica Levinson.

Levinson also breaks down the story of Christa Pike, the Tennessee inmate who is in critical condition after a pair of botched execution attempts, “Suncor Energy vs. County Commissioners of Boulder County,” a key environmental case that will be considered by the Supreme Court in its next term, and a new DNC lawsuit focused on a last-minute change to how voters overseas request their absentee ballots.
