Iranian media says the supertanker can carry 2.5 million barrels and is now burning about 8 km off Oman.
Fars says it was travelling “illegally,” but nobody has said who hit it or even what flag it was flying.
And it’s not the first one this week. Three other tankers were hit by unknown projectiles in the strait just days ago.

US President Donald Trump doubts that dictator and war criminal Vladimir Putin will agree to an energy truce before winter. Meanwhile, Ukraine has already received some signals from Russia indicating its willingness to consider such an agreement. This was reported by the Kyiv Independent , citing sources familiar with the negotiations. Washington is seeking a limited agreement between Kyiv and Moscow that would end attacks on energy facilities on both sides. This issue has become a key one in recent talks on a possible settlement to the war.
After their trip to Russia, Trump’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner returned with the impression that an agreement was possible. However, according to the publication’s source, the American president himself is more cautious about the prospects.
“Donald isn’t as confident as his team,” the source noted.
The White House, meanwhile, maintains optimism regarding the broader peace process. An administration spokesperson emphasized that the US continues to engage with both sides to end the war. Signals from Moscow remain a separate issue. According to a source for Kyiv Independent, Ukraine has received certain signals from Russia regarding the possibility of discussing an energy pause, but the details of these contacts have not been disclosed.
Kirill Dmitriev, a Kremlin representative who visited the United States last week and met with Vitkoff and Kushner, is serving as a mediator in this process. According to the American official, during the talks, the parties discussed proposals to halt attacks on energy facilities.
Washington and Kyiv now expect Dmitriev to report to Russian leadership on the results of these contacts and his position on possible trilateral negotiations. The resumption of the Black Sea Grain Corridor may be discussed separately.
Kyiv, however, refuses to agree to a unilateral cessation of attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. Ukrainian officials emphasize that any agreement is only possible if Russia simultaneously ceases attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities. This position is consistent with the public statement by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who previously confirmed Ukraine’s willingness to accept an energy pause only on mutual terms.
For Kyiv, such an agreement would reduce risks to the energy system ahead of winter, but would also limit the ability to attack Russian oil and fuel infrastructure. Oleksandr Merezhko, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Affairs, believes this option has obvious advantages and disadvantages.
“There are pros and cons. The obvious advantage for us is preserving our energy system and saving lives. But, on the other hand, our strikes deep into Russia’s territory are very painful for Russia and its military machine. Therefore, there are certain downsides… However, I am leaning toward such a ceasefire,” Merezhko stated.
The Kremlin previously publicly described the idea of a mutual pause in attacks on energy facilities as positive, but linked it to other issues, particularly the safety of commercial shipping and sanctions. However, the parties did not confirm an actual mutual agreement.
According to the Kyiv Independent, Washington is seeking a limited agreement without first negotiating all the parameters for ending the war. Ukrainian and American officials have already communicated their vision for next steps to Moscow and are now awaiting Russia’s response.
