A Syrian national was sentenced to 42 months for his role in a hacking campaign allegedly directed by members of Bashar al-Assad’s inner circle.
Prosecutors say he targeted ~47 media outlets, businesses, NGOs, and U.S. and allied government organizations between 2011 and 2024.
The operation aimed to punish reporting on Assad-era atrocities, intimidate opponents, and gather intelligence.
Cybercrimes are outlasting the regimes behind them.
