Formed in 1861, the brigade was made up of volunteers from Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan and would become one of the most famous and respected fighting units of the Civil War.
Their distinctive, wide-brimmed Hardees set them apart from most Union infantrymen who wore the more familiar kepi-style caps, earning them the nickname “Black Hats.”
The Iron Brigade fought at some of the war’s most famous battles: Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and the siege of Petersburg.
At Gettysburg alone, the Iron Brigade suffered 1,153 killed or wounded out of 1,883 men engaged — a staggering 61% casualty rate.
