“For now, it’s just an announcement; we’re waiting to see what actually happens, and the demands of high school and university students go beyond that. Currently, we’re in a situation that’s simply no longer sustainable. We’re not talking about superficial measures or things that young people are asking for. We’re simply asking for decent living conditions, so we can study properly, without ceilings collapsing around us, with teachers, and without programs closing down. And the replacement of absent teachers is a welcome step forward, but it won’t be enough. That’s why we’re still here today.”

“This definitely is a question today (feeling of anxiety among the youth). I think we’re talking about right now, about violence and how, it can express as well in the streets. What we see today is that young people are being confronted every day to violence, more on an institutional level, meaning we’re not being listened to. We don’t have enough money. We…our priorities are not the government’s priority. And that’s also triggers lots of anxiety, regarding climate change as well, regarding just money and our ability to have a proper future for our generation. So that triggers anxiety, definitely. And that triggers our will to really go and strike even more. So that’s why we will not stop until we have concrete things happening for us. More money put on the table and actions, not just words. We’re looking for really actions.“

“We have the same problems in preschool as in high school. We have outdated facilities, it’s too hot in the summer, and some schools are freezing in the winter. The government cut 40 million euros from the building renovation budget, even though we just experienced a record-breaking heatwave. It’s unacceptable. It’s outrageous. Frankly, the government doesn’t care about its teachers or its students.”

STORYLINE:
French high-schoolers and students took the streets on Tuesday for a third day of nationwide protests over deteriorating school buildings and teacher shortages.

They were joined by many teachers and some trade unions.

It’s the latest challenge to Emmanuel Macron’s presidency in a country beset by crises, both foreign and domestic.

France has seen thousands of arrests, hundreds of injuries, and schools set on fire due to student protests which are now influencing France’s presidential election campaign and drawing international attention.

The majority of protesters have been peaceful, but violence on the fringes is having an impact, with fireworks thrown at police and tear gas fired at high school pupils.

Students are expressing broad grievances over schools that are under-resourced, with dilapidated facilities and insufficient staff, notably in lower-income neighborhoods.

French media have previously shown videos of scampering rats, collapsed ceilings, leaks, broken furniture and other woes in dilapidated schools.

Some students also complain that during summer heat waves, they roast in classrooms without air-conditioning, while in winter it’s freezing.
