Hurricane Isaias: Heavy rain batters Gulf Coast amid power outages


Hurricane Isaias is slamming parts of the Gulf Coast, leaving more than 600,000 customers without power across Florida, Alabama and Georgia. The storm, which made landfall Friday night near Destin, Florida as a Category 2 storm, has been downgraded to a Category 1.

After returning to the White House from New York overnight, President Donald Trump said he is monitoring Isaias “very closely,” telling reporters he believes officials have the situation under control. Trump has also approved emergency declarations for parts of Florida and Alabama.

Trita Parsi believes the timeline for another U.S. attack on Iran is accelerating, despite Trump’s promise not to strike before November 3.

His reasoning is unsettling.

Washington may have concluded that Iran is preparing its own preemptive attack, potentially just days before the midterms.

That would leave Trump looking powerless at the worst possible political moment.

Parsi suspects the administration may now prefer a limited American strike first, not necessarily to win a military victory, but to retain control over when and how the confrontation begins.

Meanwhile, negotiations remain stuck over Iran’s enriched uranium, with Washington demanding concessions Tehran is increasingly reluctant to make.

Parsi warns that even a supposedly limited strike could trigger retaliation neither side can contain.

And the military buildup suggests Washington is running out of patience.

The danger is that both sides may end up attacking first because each believes the other is about to do exactly that.
