Christa Pike on ventilator after failed execution attempt


New questions are being raised about what went wrong during Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute death row inmate Christa Pike.

Pike is reportedly on a ventilator after officials were unable to complete her execution, with suspected problems involving the intravenous lines used to administer the lethal injection drugs.

Officials administered two doses of the lethal injection drugs during the execution attempt, but reports indicate the drugs entered Pike’s body tissue instead of reaching her bloodstream.

The complication ultimately prevented the execution from being carried out.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville. Pike was 18 at the time of the killing and became the youngest woman sentenced to death in the United States in the modern era.

The failed execution is now drawing scrutiny over Tennessee’s lethal injection process and what happened as officials attempted to administer the drugs.

Questions surrounding intravenous access have surfaced in other executions across the country, with difficulties properly establishing IV lines sometimes causing lengthy delays or forcing executions to be called off.
