The role of artillery in the war in Ukraine has changed significantly since the widespread use of drones. While artillery largely determined the nature of combat operations at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, drones now carry out a significant portion of strikes. At the same time, completely abandoning artillery is impossible, as it can perform tasks that drones are currently unable to handle, TWZ writes .
Lieutenant Colonel Vitaliy Kornienko, commander of the 7th Artillery Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine, explained in an interview with the Ukrainian publication “Oboronka” that guns were previously deployed en masse in positions and used to create a powerful artillery barrage. This tactic has now become too dangerous due to the proliferation of reconnaissance and attack drones.
The officer noted that FPV drones are increasingly being used to engage individual targets, rather than large numbers of artillery shells. He explained that a typical artillery strike can currently consist of up to 10 shots: first, a few shells are fired to determine the range, after which the target is engaged. Every shot also carries the risk of exposing the gun’s position. Therefore, artillery units are forced to act much more cautiously. One option for adapting to the new conditions was to combine drones and artillery within a single brigade.
Kornienko explained that drones can destroy enemy artillery and logistics, while guns are used to support infantry, engage targets, and deter assault groups.
The primary operations of such a brigade focus on targets at depths of approximately 10 kilometers or more behind enemy lines. Artillery can also be deployed for closer targets if necessary. At the same time, some logistics tasks are gradually being transferred to ground-based robotic systems. They are already being used to deliver ammunition to drone and artillery positions, as well as food and fuel for generators. According to Kornienko, approximately 95% of his unit’s strikes are currently carried out by drones. However, artillery is still needed for certain missions.
In particular, in some areas, drones are unable to reach their targets due to electronic warfare systems. In such cases, artillery is used.
Its advantage is that the projectile’s flight is unaffected by electronic interference. Furthermore, the artillery can operate in difficult weather conditions, such as fog, strong winds, or snow.
The officer emphasized that the artillery’s mission had shifted from the massive destruction of the enemy to the destruction, suppression, and stopping of assault groups and armored columns. Due to the drone threat, artillery positions have also changed. While previously several guns could be deployed at a single position, such a concentration of equipment now creates an excessive risk of destruction.
According to Kornienko, a modern artillery position is prepared and camouflaged in advance. It can be an underground caponier with hidden entrances.
Before deploying artillery, drones are also used to monitor the airspace over the area.
