President Donald Trump actively praised the agreement while attending the G-7 summit. President Trump stated, “We reached an agreement with Iran that achieves everything we set out to accomplish, everything and much more.”
The tentative deal outlines specific actions for both nations, establishing that Iran must destroy its stockpile of enriched uranium, potentially via downblending. In addition, the agreement allows toll-free transit through the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days.
In exchange, the U.S. will permit Iran to immediately resume oil and petroleum sales. The United States also plans to work alongside regional partners to develop a 300 billion dollar rebuilding investment fund for Iran. President Trump explicitly noted that no direct funding would come from American tax dollars.
Numerous questions linger regarding the full contents of the agreement because Iranian officials requested that the White House withhold the official text for now. An in-person signing ceremony was originally scheduled to take place on June 19 in Switzerland, but Trump indicates the document could be signed earlier via remote means to accelerate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Vice President J.D. Vance is still scheduled to travel to Switzerland to initiate those high-stakes talks.
