Hundreds of thousands took to the streets across France last weekend to protest against the cost of living and public services. One group that joined the cause was the Yellow Vests — a massive movement that stirred similar unrest in 2018. So how does today’s demonstrations and discontent compare?

Hundreds of thousands of protesters marched in over 140 cities across France on Saturday, demanding relief from the high cost of living, more funding for public services and improvements to deteriorating schools, among other grievances. The demonstrations were the latest — and largest — in a series of protests that began in September with high schooler-led demonstrations against overcrowded classrooms and crumbling school infrastructure. Some cities saw property destruction, arson and theft on Saturday, with city halls and other symbols of the state coming under attack. Officials said nearly 1,000 police officers were injured and some 2,400 people were arrested.

Mario Nawfal (@MarioNawfal)🇺🇸 Melania Trump is taking on one of medicine’s longest-ignored problems: women’s health.

“Beginning today, we will change the reality of women’s health.”

The First Lady helped drive a new executive order establishing a dedicated Women’s Health Division at the National Institutes of Health.

The focus is conditions like endometriosis, osteoporosis, maternal health complications and heart disease, areas where women have faced serious gaps in research and treatment.

And Melania wants artificial intelligence helping accelerate the search for cures.

Deadly protests spark France’s worst rioting in years

France is reeling from some of its worst rioting in years after nationwide protests erupted into deadly violence and looting over the weekend, with more than 2,000 people arrested.

Some 3,000 businesses have been either ransacked or damaged across the country. Many of the demonstrations emerged over the cost of living and fuel prices, with additional demonstrations planned later this week. Hundreds of thousands of people have protested peacefully, but on the sidelines there have been explosions of violence that could happen again.

President Emmanuel Macron is promising to address protesters’ concerns while warning that those responsible for the looting and destruction will be held accountable.
