For several months, 26-year-old Russian Army Lieutenant Lev Stupnikov secretly transmitted coordinates of Russian military units, operational plans, and radio frequencies to Ukraine. The information Stupnikov provided helped Kyiv eliminate over 300 occupiers, including officers. The Wall Street Journal writes about this . The article states that Stupnikov graduated from a prestigious military academy in St. Petersburg and received the rank of lieutenant. However, even during his studies, he began to become disillusioned with the system he intended to serve. According to him, bribes were common in military education: money was demanded for dismissals, extended vacations, and the opportunity to choose one’s future service location. After Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, his rejection of the military system intensified. Stupnikov was shocked by reports of the bombing of Ukrainian cities and the deaths of civilians, but he concealed his views and continued his military career, despite wanting to leave the army, pursue fitness, and build a family life. In 2023, he was sent to the front as part of the 36th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade, operating in the Ugledar area. There, the officer encountered what would ultimately solidify his rejection of the war: the looting of Ukrainian homes, violence against local residents, and the use of poorly trained recruits, including former prisoners, in combat. Stupnikov served as the battalion’s communications chief. His duties gave him access to information about unit deployments, the operation of reconnaissance drones, surveillance cameras, and command plans. This information subsequently became particularly important to the Ukrainian side. The first major operation was a strike on a concentration of Russian troops in February 2024. Stupnikov provided the Ukrainian side with the exact coordinates of the location of the Russian troops and commanders gathered to observe the exercises. He also relayed information on the group’s size. According to his subsequent reports, 68 Russian soldiers were killed in the attack , and another 60 were wounded . Among the dead were ten officers, including Colonel Gusein Musayev , commander of the 36th Motorized Rifle Brigade . Stupnikov managed to avoid detection. He destroyed one of the devices he was using and continued transmitting information to the Ukrainian side. In March, Ukrainian forces attacked a brigade officers’ meeting. In May, a strike followed on the basement of a former hotel housing two assault units, killing approximately 20 servicemen, including a captain . Another leak of information facilitated an attack on a command post during a high-ranking military meeting. In addition to transmitting information, he engaged in sabotage. Specifically, he disabled surveillance cameras monitoring Ukrainian territory and interfered with drone control equipment.
In total, according to an assessment by the WSJ based on interviews with people involved in the operations and reviewed materials, Stupnikov’s actions helped the Ukrainian side kill more than 300 Russian servicemen . In early July 2024, the Ukrainian side prepared to evacuate Stupnikov from territory controlled by Russian troops. After crossing the front line, Stupnikov found himself in captivity, where he was isolated from other prisoners of war. Soon after, Denis Kapustin, commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps fighting on the Ukrainian side, met with him and invited him to join the corps. As a result, Stupnikov agreed to join the RDC. The article also states that Stupnikov’s mother, Tatyana Yantsen, who opposes the Putin regime, played a key role in his story. It was she who helped her son connect with Ukrainian intelligence. In February 2024, she contacted Ukrainian blogger Dmitry Karpenko, who recorded interviews with Russian prisoners of war. He was searching for Russians willing to provide Ukraine with information about the actions of the Russian army.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence that erupted on the sidelines of nationwide protests, in a televised address on Sunday, 18 October 2026. He blamed far-left groups and criminals for the looting and attacks on shops and town halls, which left several hundred police officers and gendarmes injured. Macron said those responsible “must pay” and would be held accountable, while stressing that peaceful protesters with legitimate concerns over living costs must not be confused with rioters.
