Protesters block access to Louvre museum in Paris in support of demonstrations

Protesters blocked entrances to the Louvre museum in Paris on Monday in support of a nationwide high school student protest movement and to denounce “police repression”, the museum’s management and unions told the AFP news agency, Report informs via Euronews.

The museum could not open as scheduled because of a protest led by students from the Ecole du Louvre, management said.

A leaflet displayed outside the museum read: “We are proud to announce that we are blocking the world’s largest museum.”

Nationwide, more than 2,330 people were taken into police custody over the weekend, 70% of whom were adults, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Monday.

More than 2,000 shops were expected to have been affected by the weekend’s violence across France, with damage running into “hundreds of millions of euros”, according to chamber of commerce president Alain Di Crescenzo.

Protests initially began last month with students protesting over conditions in lycées across the country but have escalated to cover a broader range of concerns such as the cost of living and inflation.

Marseille cleans up after looting and vandalism in protest

Rubbish littered the streets of Marseille on Sunday, one day after demonstrations against rising living costs and declining public services spiralled out of control in some of the worst violence France has witnessed for decades. On Saturday, black-clad protesters broke into Marseille’s city hall and defaced the building with graffiti, while public buildings were also targeted in other French cities.

Clashes, fires and looting break out as protesters rally across France, joining students

Violent clashes, fires and looting marred demonstrations across France on Saturday as hundreds of thousands of people marched against rising living costs and poor conditions in schools. About 400 people were arrested nationwide, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said.

Nuñez said 110 marches drew about 550,000 people across the country. Organizers, including the CGT labor union and students’ organizations, said about 800,000 demonstrators took to the streets.

Nuñez described troublemakers as “extremely violent, radical far-left groups” whom, he said, sought confrontations with police and targeted public buildings, including city halls and local government offices. He said those groups have been joined by offenders willing to loot shops. Most of those arrested are adults, he said.

Some incidents were still ongoing in central Paris on Saturday evening.

“There is no place for violence in our Republic,” French President Emmanuel Macron said in a message on X. “Those who vandalized property, attacked government offices and businesses, and even looted our town halls will be prosecuted and punished.”

“We will stand united against those who sow chaos … and who prevent people from peacefully expressing their demands,” Macron added.

We now hear that 🇺🇸 and 🇷🇺 are also discussing joint data centers. Good luck with that. Europe will certainly not join in. Not difficult to know which interests in 🇷🇺 that will be jubilant over this.
