Iran Told the U.S. Navy to LEAVE Hormuz. The Blockade Isn’t Lifting

Iran says the Strait of Hormuz reopens only if the U.S. lifts its naval blockade and leaves the region, as attacks on ships near the strait hit a record for the war.

MIKE DROP NEWSROOM | 19 OCTOBER 2026

Iran’s foreign minister laid out Tehran’s conditions on Sunday: lift the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports, lift oil sanctions and end hostilities, while an Iranian army spokesman said the strait opens when U.S. forces leave. Mike Ritland breaks down whether the blockade still serves the goal of a non-nuclear Iran, and what it costs to keep U.S. sailors in range of drones, fast boats and mines while the war drags on.

Also covered: the State Department’s warning to Americans across the Middle East as the Houthi-Saudi fight widens, the airman killed in a rappelling demonstration before the Navy-UTSA game, and the rioting sweeping France.

Is the Hormuz blockade still worth it? Tell us in the comments.

James Talarico is close to taking Texas. Republicans are to blame

Just two weeks shy of the midterm elections, all eyes are on Texas as 37-year-old Democratic state Rep. James Talarico maintains a lead over his Republican competitor, Ken Paxton. A recent ReconMR/Siena Research Institute poll finds that 48% of voters express a preference for Talarico, with 44% favoring his opponent. For the first time since 1988, Texans might be gearing up to elect a Democratic senator. The reason? Republicans are not catering to the concerns of regular Americans.

Pakistan’s principal decision-maker, Field Marshal Asim Munir, is reportedly heading to Tehran, Iran this week, according to some regional news outlets, amidst the threat of imminent U.S.-Iran escalation. Since the start of the war, Pakistan has positioned itself as a mediator, but has struggled to realize the level of success in the role that other regional nations, like Qatar and Oman, have. This comes as Iran increasingly targets vessels in the Strait of Hormuz to gain back lost leverage and the likelihood of U.S. President Donald J. Trump authorizing expanded strikes on Iran in the near term rises.
