🇺🇸 Trump’s pause on retaliation didn’t cool tensions. It handed Iran a green light. Counter-terrorism analyst Malcolm Nance breaks down how Tehran read American restraint as an invitation to escalate, targeting commercial shipping with drones, anti-ship missiles, and what may be staged mine footage. “They said the Americans aren’t striking back, but we’re seeing a lot of ship traffic down there. So let’s just start hosing these ships.” The Strait of Hormuz isn’t a standoff anymore. It’s a laboratory. @MalcolmNance

Mario Nawfal (@MarioNawfal)🇺🇸🇮🇷 Iran has found a way to keep the Strait of Hormuz dangerous, even with the U.S. Navy protecting shipping.

I spoke with former U.S. intelligence officer Malcolm Nance about the renewed attacks on commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz.

And his explanation was fascinating.

According to Nance, the US military had developed a relatively effective shipping corridor along the southern side of the strait, using helicopters, patrol aircraft and naval air defenses to protect vessels moving toward the UAE.

For a while, it appeared to be working.

But Nance believes Iran was watching the traffic increase and waiting for Washington to become less willing to retaliate.

Now, drones and anti-ship missiles are reportedly hitting vessels again, threatening the shipping route that Gulf exporters depend on.

And that creates a serious problem for Trump.

The U.S. can spend enormous resources escorting tankers, intercepting missiles and maintaining patrols. Iran only needs enough successful attacks to make commercial shipping dangerous and expensive.

We also discussed the expanding war in Yemen, where Saudi Arabia and the Houthis are drawing more regional players into the conflict.

Egyptian military assistance is being discussed, while UAE-backed Yemeni forces are reportedly coordinating more closely with Saudi-backed factions.

The U.S. Navy may be able to get ships through Hormuz. But keeping the route commercially viable while Iran continues attacking it is an entirely different challenge.

And Nance’s assessment suggests Washington hasn’t solved that problem yet.

Ukraine is bringing tanks back to the battlefield; armored vehicles are crushing Russian infantry

The Ukrainian military has begun employing a new tactic for using armored vehicles that allows for limited mechanized maneuvers despite the constant threat from Russian drones. This involves combining tanks and infantry fighting vehicles with escort drones and additional counter-drone defenses, according to Forbes.

As the author of the publication explains, tanks played a vital role in the initial stages of Russia’s full-scale invasion. However, the proliferation of attack drones gradually limited the use of armored vehicles, forcing both sides to rely more heavily on infantry operations. Now, the Ukrainians have reinvented the use of tanks in these new circumstances.

An example of this new approach is demonstrated in a video published by a Ukrainian military blogger, likely related to the actions of the 475th Separate Assault Regiment. The footage shows a Ukrainian tank and a Bradley infantry fighting vehicle moving along a road under attack from Russian drones, while continuing to fire on detected targets. The armored vehicles are accompanied by Ukrainian FPV drones, which intercept enemy drones. In one scene, a Ukrainian drone alters the trajectory of a Russian FPV drone, pursues it, and destroys it before it reaches the armored vehicles. Vampire heavy bombers also operate ahead, scouting enemy positions and dropping munitions on likely Russian military locations.

Additional protection is provided by so-called “hedgehog” armor—a structure of metal rods protruding from the vehicle’s hull. It’s designed to detonate drones at a distance from the main armor. In the video, a Bradley is struck by a Lightning drone, but, judging by the footage, it sustains minor damage and continues moving.

“The combination of drone tracking and ‘hedgehog’ armor creates a multi-layered defense strategy against various types of drone threats,” the author of the publication states.

According to the author, Ukrainian troops use small groups of two or three armored vehicles. This facilitates air cover, as larger columns are easier to detect, and their protection requires more drones and operators.

At the same time, this tactic has its vulnerabilities. Intercepting enemy drones can create gaps in cover, and Vampire drones must periodically return to replenish ammunition and recharge their batteries. Additional armor also doesn’t guarantee complete safety: repeated strikes can eventually disable the vehicle.

Ukraine is adopting a new approach amid successful counteroffensives on several frontlines, particularly in the Kharkiv and Donetsk oblasts. The return of tanks could help the Ukrainian Armed Forces destroy fortified positions with direct fire, while drones will provide reconnaissance and cover. However, converting localized successes into large-scale breakthroughs remains challenging due to the intensive use of Russian drones.

According to the observer, the future effectiveness of armored operations will depend on which side can secure local air superiority using drones. Russia could also adopt Ukrainian technologies, which would intensify competition in the development of armored vehicle protection and enemy vehicle engagement capabilities.
