Could the midterms derail Trump’s agenda?

The fight for control of Congress is entering its final stretch ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Could the election become a referendum on Trump’s presidency? We discuss what’s at stake with William Galston, Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and former Clinton administration adviser.

Hundreds join Asheville “No Kings” march

Demonstrators in Asheville marched from the courthouse plaza to Martin Luther King Jr. Park on Saturday.

“I haven’t been to one of these before, so I don’t know if this is a big number, but the parade looked like there were a lot of people in it,” said Asheville resident Marc Rudow.

Several hundred people attended the “No Kings” demonstration in Asheville.

On Friday, one of the organizers told News 13 they were hoping for 500 to a 1,000 people.

“I would say there’s 500 people or so here,” Asheville Fights Back Network co-founder Leslie Boyd said.

Boyd said the theme of the nationwide protests is “No Kings: Vote Early.” The focus was voter participation and election protection, a press release from the organization adds.

“We’re spreading the word, you need to vote,” Boyd said.

“It’s important for you to vote and there’s a lot of encouragement here for people to vote,” Rudow said.

Several community organizations had booths set up including WNC Votes! which describes itself as a nonpartisan voter outreach coalition.

“There’s information on voting, where to vote, how to vote, encouraging you to check your registration before you go and encouraging everybody to vote early,” Boyd said.

It’s not just people attending these demonstrations who feel that voting is a civic duty and that promoting early voting can be beneficial.

“No necessarily thoughts leaning left or right. I would say if you’re not happy with a current administration, policies or lack of movement, you feel like things have gotten worse then yeah, do something about it and go vote early,” said Shawn Clark, a Hendersonville resident who didn’t participate in “No Kings.”
Asheville wasn’t the only place where demonstrators turned out.

“We just need to make the national situation a little bit different,” Rudow said.
