With a focus on crucial urban centers, the Houthis are zeroing in on airports within the Saudi capital, Riyadh, as well as Dammam, strategically located along the Persian Gulf adjacent to Bahrain and Qatar.
As tensions skyrocket, Saudi Arabia and its allies must stop Houthi resupply.
As per the Council on Foreign Relations, Iran is the Houthis’ primary benefactor, providing them with security assistance, such as weapons transfers, training, and intelligence support.
Such aid typically reaches the Houthis via Iran’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or the IRGC, which also helps advise the Houthis’ military command.
Iran facilitates a supply of more sophisticated weaponry than the Houthis could acquire on their own, especially missiles and drones.
While Iranian support has helped the Houthis gain and maintain military superiority within Yemen, experts say it has had greater effect elsewhere.
The role of Iran has been decisive in providing the Houthis with smuggled weapons and expertise to project power into the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.
The Houthis assist Iran by menacing Saudi Arabia’s border and protecting Iranian ships in the Red Sea, giving Iran room to evade sanctions on oil shipping by distracting its enemies and facilitating a shadow network.
At the same time, experts say Yemen offers a testing ground for Iranian weapons on its front lines and in the Red Sea.
Like all Axis of Resistance members in Iran’s proxy network, the Houthis offer Iran plausible deniability: Members routinely claim responsibility for attacks likely ordered or perpetrated by Iran.

Ukraine has called on its international partners to increase pressure on Russia following a drone attack on two vessels off the coast of Bulgaria in the Black Sea, one of which was carrying Azerbaijani citizens.
According to Report, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a post on X that the Russian armed forces had carried out the attack on the commercial vessels. Ukrainian citizens were also among the crew members.
“Russia’s latest attack on commercial vessels near Bulgaria’s territorial waters, which injured Ukrainian and Azerbaijani citizens, once again demonstrates Moscow’s deliberate disregard for civilian lives and maritime security in the Black Sea,” he said.
The Ukrainian foreign minister called on partners “to step up pressure on Russia, strengthen sanctions, and take decisive action to hold it accountable and protect freedom of navigation.”
He added that the Black Sea is a lifeline for global food security.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev earlier said drones had attacked two vessels in the Black Sea, one of which sank. Eight Azerbaijani citizens were among the crew members of one of the vessels.
