Attorneys Brian Kabateck and Shant Karnikian break down the Justice Department’s “grand conspiracy” investigation, a Fort Pierce, Florida grand jury probe of Obama- and Biden-era officials who investigated Donald Trump, which has produced no indictments after roughly six months while its leadership keeps walking out the door. Brian explains the theory: it bundles the 2016 Russia investigation, the Mar-a-Lago documents search, and other cases into one continuing conspiracy, a framing that lets prosecutors argue acts within the five-year statute of limitations that would otherwise bar decade-old conduct. Brian and Shant run through the departures: Joseph diGenova, the 81-year-old Reagan-era prosecutor tapped in April after career prosecutor Maria Medetis Long left, resigned in September after friction with Attorney General Todd Blanche without bringing a single case, reportedly telling the New York Post that wanting indictments without evidence is “an ethical problem”; lead FBI agent Jack Eckenrode has left; and Kurt Olsen, the 2020 election denier and former White House election security director, reportedly stepped down amid security-clearance issues, though Blanche insists he did not resign. Brian and Shant argue the exits reflect both low morale and competence problems, point to subpoenas for figures like John Brennan and James Comey, and say Trump wants an indictment before the midterms to fire up his base, which is ironic from a president who rails about “lawfare.” Brian compares it to a backwards Friday Night Massacre, in which appointees keep resigning because they can’t deliver the indictments Trump wants. Brian’s bottom line: this investigation is more likely to fizzle than to produce a charge, and the revolving door says more about its merits than any press conference.
