The meeting comes as Iran looks to strengthen diplomatic and strategic ties with Russia amid its conflict with the United States and Israel. Putin said Russia was ready to do everything within its power to help resolve the crisis, while highlighting the development of relations between Moscow and Tehran.
The two leaders also discussed expanding bilateral cooperation across key sectors, including energy, agriculture, transportation and trade. Both countries face Western sanctions and have deepened their economic and diplomatic relationship in recent years.
Meanwhile, US-Iran negotiations remain at an impasse. Pezeshkian has questioned the value of negotiations with Washington, while Russia has offered to support mediation efforts. The big question is whether Moscow can play a meaningful role in bringing the conflict closer to a diplomatic settlement.
Could Russia emerge as a key mediator? Will Tehran’s growing partnership with Moscow change the regional balance? And what does the meeting mean for Washington, Israel and the wider Middle East?
