NEW: 🇷🇺 Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder attended Vladimir Putin’s birthday party in Moscow earlier this week, according to the Kremlin.
The Kremlin claims Putin learned from media reports that Schröder was in Moscow on a business trip and decided to invite him to the celebration.
Schröder served as German chancellor from 1998 to 2005 and has maintained close ties to Russia since leaving office, including his former roles connected to Russian state energy giant Gazprom.
His relationship with Putin and his continued links to Russian interests have drawn years of criticism in Germany, particularly following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Former BND chief August Hanning, arrested days ago on suspicion of espionage and other serious offences, led Germany’s foreign intelligence service from 1998 to 2005 during Schröder’s chancellorship.
