German search engine Ecosia is dropping France’s Mistral in favor of open-weight AI models, including China’s Qwen, GLM and Kimi.
“We are disappointed with the quality of Mistral,” CEO Christian Kroll told POLITICO, claiming the French AI company is a year behind its competitors.
Ecosia says the switch has cut costs roughly in HALF while improving performance.
The irony: a European company known for promoting technological independence is turning to Chinese AI because it says Europe’s leading alternative isn’t competitive enough 🤣🤣🤣

In late May, a UPS shipment carrying a cockpit canopy and weapons-bay door from an Australian F-35A was supposed to head to the U.S. for repairs.
Instead, it went through South Korea and ended up in Hong Kong, where Chinese authorities reportedly seized the parts and didn’t return them.
The apparent culprit? An email warning about export restrictions that reportedly went unnoticed.
Australia insists the parts weren’t sensitive.
But here’s the interesting bit: both were coated in radar-absorbing material, and the canopy uses a specialized coating that only the U.S. and its partners have access to.
Australia can’t even repair it locally.
A single canopy isn’t going to hand China the F-35’s stealth secrets.
But getting physical access to those coatings could help Chinese engineers study their composition, test how they interact with radar, and check whether their existing intelligence about the jet is accurate.
Think of it as getting a few missing pieces of a puzzle you’ve already spent years trying to solve.
We don’t know whether China has actually examined or exploited the parts, but the opportunity alone is significant.
And there’s a much bigger problem lurking behind this particular shipping disaster.
A 2023 U.S. government audit found that the F-35 program couldn’t independently track its global spare-parts inventory.
A contractor had lost more than 1 MILLION spare parts worth over $85 million, and most of those losses were never reported to the program office.
That’s quite an oversight for one of the world’s most sophisticated fighter jets.
The F-35 relies on a sprawling international supply chain, with components manufactured, shipped and repaired across more than a dozen countries.
Every transfer creates another opportunity for something to go missing, get misdirected or end up somewhere it absolutely shouldn’t.
And when those components contain technology designed to make a fighter jet difficult to detect, a logistics failure can quickly become an intelligence problem.
