Governor Kathy Hochul declared a disaster emergency across New York on Oct. 5, until Nov. 4. As of Oct. 3 the state had 108 measles cases this year, 92 of them since July 15, in under-immunized rural communities in 18 counties. The order lets more people give the vaccine and take tests: paramedics, midwives, pharmacists. The order says Pennsylvania had 977 cases and five deaths as of Oct. 2, in rural counties that border New York. THL’s Mia Kontio says the risk for a traveler is very low.
