He picked October 24 because of a Hmong arts celebration at the mall, and targeted it because he claimed its owners were Jewish, writing that he wanted to kill enough people that no one would go there.

The mall wasn’t even Plan A. He first wanted to go fight for al-Shabaab in Somalia, and only settled on a mass shooting because he couldn’t afford the trip.
