Robert Morton: A new China counterintelligence case every 12 hours? That ought to wake people up. If the FBI can’t keep pace, investigations pile up and potential threats may get less attention. Beijing doesn’t need to beat every defense. It just needs to find the gaps. #China #FBI

🇺🇸 The sudden withdrawal of all 12 U.S. B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford may have exposed a dangerous vulnerability in America’s war against Iran.

The bombers were pulled after intelligence indicated the Iranian regime may be responsible for the RAF Fairford incident, with the threat urgent enough that some aircraft left before aerial-refueling tankers were even in position.

Nothing had to be destroyed. The threat alone removed valuable bombers from a strategically useful forward base.

Fairford shortened the journey to Iran. Moving the B-1s back to the U.S. protects them, but makes future missions longer, more tanker-dependent and more expensive.

The danger is that Iran learns from this. If threatening one overseas base moves American aircraft, why not pressure the others?

Washington then faces an expensive choice: withdraw vulnerable assets or spend heavily protecting bases with air defenses, counter-drone systems and additional security.

There is a political cost too. Every threatened base forces an allied government to justify exposing its territory and citizens to possible retaliation.

Over time, that could make allies less willing to provide bases, overflight rights or military support, even if broader economic ties remain intact.

The U.S. still has enormous long-range strike capabilities. But fewer forward bases mean more tankers, longer missions, fewer options and higher costs.

Iran doesn’t necessarily have to defeat American airpower directly.

It may only have to make hosting it dangerous enough that America slowly runs out of cheap enough places from which to use it.
