An employee of the Irkutsk anti-plague institute died last week. TASS wrote on Oct. 4 that the situation was stable and the cause was pneumonia of unknown origin, not plague. Peskov told reporters to stick to official statements. Russian media have deleted reports, The Insider said.

City hospitals deny claims of a three-week quarantine. No cases are lab-confirmed, they say. Nearly 200 people were placed under observation. Tests on contacts found Covid and rhinovirus, not plague, officials said.

Kazakhstan calls the risk low. Uzbekistan has no land border with Russia and raised its alert anyway. Tajikistan has also tightened checks.

The last confirmed case in Russia was 2016, a boy in Altai who handled a marmot.

The border is moving. The diagnosis is not.
