🇪🇺 The euro is having a rough start to the week, and European politics are doing it no favors.
The currency fell as much as 0.8% to $1.1161, its weakest level since May 2025, as investors got increasingly nervous about France’s finances and talk of an early election in Spain.
France is the bigger headache. The extra yield investors demand to hold French debt over German bonds just hit levels not seen since 2011, while markets are already looking nervously toward the 2027 election.
Meanwhile, the dollar is getting another boost from expectations that the Fed may still have 3 more rate hikes coming.
So traders are doing what traders do when Europe starts looking politically messy. They’re selling first and asking questions later.
A little French fiscal drama and some Spanish election chatter, and suddenly the euro remembers stability is optional.
