Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described the crime as a “brutal and heinous” robbery and murder. She said she had urged the US to “enforce stricter discipline” of its personnel.
Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said the woman’s body was discovered early Saturday morning in a hotel in Naha City, the capital of Okinawa, an island chain south of the country’s mainland.
“We are actively cooperating with Japanese authorities, in response to allegations of serious criminal actions by a Marine,” the US Marine Corps said on social media, extending condolences to the victim’s family.

The allegation remains unconfirmed.
Kent Police confirmed deploying public-order officers, drones and evidence-gathering teams around the demonstration, but neither police nor the Port of Dover has confirmed deliberately jamming mobile signals.
If confirmed, however, this would cross a deeply concerning line. Controlling where a protest can take place is one thing; preventing citizens from broadcasting what authorities are doing is something fundamentally different.
Smartphones have given ordinary people the ability to create an independent, live record of major events. Take that away and authorities potentially gain far greater control over which version of events reaches the public first.
That becomes especially concerning in Britain, where communications and public-order laws already criminalize speech deemed “grossly offensive” or “menacing.”
Allowing authorities to deliberately disable communications at politically sensitive events creates a precedent that could expand to other demonstrations, buildings and gatherings. and eventually even homes or areas associated with speech deemed “hateful.”
There is no evidence Britain currently intends to go that far. But once the power to switch off the public’s ability to communicate in one politically sensitive place becomes accepted, the crucial question becomes where that power stops.
