JUST IN: The withdrawal of 12 B-1B “Lancer” bombers from RAF Fairford was reportedly prompted by threats of an Iran-backed terrorist attack against the base, according to Axios and the WSJ. Additionally, a Pentagon spokesperson confirmed that the bombers can still carry out airstrikes from the United States, if needed.

About a dozen B-1s had been parked at RAF Fairford, and the Pentagon now says every one of them is back in the U.S. The timing is hard to miss. Just a week ago, 5 men were arrested near the base over a suspected terror plot, and Britain thinks Iran had a hand in it. The Pentagon isn’t saying why the bombers left, but reports say security worries around the base were a part of it. Iran says the whole thing is baseless and has called in Britain’s ambassador in Tehran to complain. Whatever the reason, Tehran won’t be complaining about this one.
