Putin vs Russia’s Oligarchs: The Kremlin Deal Just Broke


For 20 years, Putin’s richest allies operated under one bargain: stay loyal, stay useful, and keep their fortunes. That bargain is now breaking as wartime costs rise and private empires become targets. Billionaires who once relied on access and political protection are facing forced payments, heavier taxes, and confiscations. Rival Kremlin factions are increasingly fighting over who pays, who loses control, and who gets the assets.

Since 2022, the struggle over wartime money has become inseparable from a struggle over ownership and political protection. Russia’s 155 billionaires now control roughly $700 billion, while the state has seized around $90 billion in private property. More than 90% of resold or transferred assets went to state corporations or Putin-linked insiders. Powerful security networks are gaining influence as fortunes and companies change hands.

As military spending keeps rising, loyalty no longer guarantees safety inside Putin’s system. Billionaires can pay billions, remain obedient, and still lose their companies. That changes the rules holding the elite together. A financial squeeze is becoming a fight over survival, property, and control inside the Kremlin.

A hospital filled with young Iranian soldiers exposed to mustard gas. “The rooms were full. The hallways were full.” Marandi was himself exposed to mustard gas and a nerve agent during the Iran-Iraq War. He remembers friends who survived the initial attacks, only to suffer for decades from the damage to their lungs. One colleague’s brother lived with it for more than 30 years before eventually dying.
