🇬🇧🇮🇷 BRITAIN STILL DOESN’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED OUTSIDE RAF FAIRFORD
Three white vans approached one of America’s most important air bases in Britain in the middle of the night.
Then one of the men inside apparently called emergency services himself.
What followed looked like the response to a major terrorist plot: five arrests, 85 homes evacuated, a bomb-disposal robot deployed and senior British officials pointing to indications of Iranian involvement.
Then the story got strange.
No explosives were found. Police reportedly recovered gasoline from the vans, and all five suspects were released on bail within 24 hours.
Investigators are now considering possibilities ranging from an attempted attack or diversion to a hoax, or low-level criminals recruited without knowing the purpose of the operation.
The Iranian connection comes largely from intelligence preceding the incident. Western agencies had reportedly warned of a possible Iran-backed attack on RAF Fairford, as for U.S. bases in Germany, while Iranian officials had described European bases supporting U.S. operations as legitimate targets.
But British authorities have not publicly established what these five men intended to do, much less demonstrated a direct connection between them and Tehran.
So Britain may have disrupted an Iranian operation outside a major U.S. air base.
It just still doesn’t know what the operation actually was.
