A Tennessee death row inmate remains unconscious and on a ventilator following a failed execution attempt involving two doses of pentobarbital, drawing renewed scrutiny to state execution protocols. The inmate, Christa Pike, survived the attempt on Wednesday, prompting her attorney, Randy Spivey, to condemn the state’s actions for failing to maintain basic human dignity. In response to the failed procedure, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced a halt to all executions through the end of the year while a comprehensive investigation is conducted.
The controversy highlights an Arizona connection through Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada, who previously served as deputy director of the Arizona Department of Corrections. During his tenure overseeing prison operations in Arizona, the state experienced significant issues with lethal injection procedures. Notable instances in 2022 involved prolonged attempts to establish IV access during the executions of Clarence Dixon and Frank Atwood.
Following those troubled executions, Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs paused lethal injections and appointed retired federal Judge David Duncan to review the state’s procedures. Duncan concluded that lethal injection is not a workable method due to issues with medical personnel availability and drug sourcing, recommending firing squads as a lower-risk alternative before being removed from his position. While Arizona resumed executions in 2025, Tennessee now faces similar challenges surrounding its death penalty administration. FOX 10’s Jacob Luthi reports.

🇺🇸🇮🇷 One Navy squadron fired 421 bombs and missiles at Iran: more than half of what an entire carrier group used in 8 MONTHS against the Houthis
The Black Aces’ Super Hornets off the USS Abraham Lincoln dropped 173 small precision bombs, dozens of 2,000-pounders and bunker-busting glide bombs, plus 39 air-to-air missiles likely fired at drones, roughly $43.6 million worth.
One jet even wears a broken submarine kill mark labeled “Sub Buster.”
That’s one of four strike squadrons on one carrier, whose crew is only now heading home from a deployment that started last year, so the real bill for this war is still buried in numbers the Pentagon hasn’t released, and the taxpayers footing it deserve the full count.
