The Pentagon is bringing together a select group of NATO allies while Britain, France and the Baltic states have been left out.
Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby has held talks with Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Finland, describing the participants as allies that are increasing defence spending, have sufficient military scale and are prepared to make practical decisions. Another meeting is planned in Poland.
So what is Washington trying to achieve? Why exclude two of Europe’s nuclear powers and the Baltic states? And could closer cooperation with a smaller group eventually affect US military planning, weapons or forces in Europe?

The NYPD has released dramatic body-camera and drone footage showing the final moments of a tense encounter on New York’s Brooklyn Bridge. Police say 41-year-old Chaun Bottom was walking along the bridge cables with a knife on September 4, 2026, prompting Emergency Services Unit officers to spend nearly an hour trying to persuade him to come down safely and drop the weapon. The footage shows officers repeatedly issuing commands before Bottom moved toward them with the knife raised. An officer then fired, and Bottom was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is reviewing the fatal shooting.
