An Azerbaijani serviceman has been detained in Armenia after shooting an Armenian citizen in the leg in the village of Shaki in Syunik Province, Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS) said.
According to the NSS, on September 29, Azerbaijan’s State Security Service informed its Armenian counterpart that a serviceman from one of Azerbaijan’s military units had left his place of service under unknown circumstances.
It was not ruled out that the serviceman may have illegally crossed into Armenia. Following the notification, the competent authorities of Armenia and Azerbaijan carried out relevant search operations.
On October 1 at 2:15 p.m., Armenia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs’ 112 emergency center received a report that an Armenian citizen had been shot in the leg in Shaki, Syunik Province.
Operational groups from various units of the Interior Ministry’s Police were dispatched to the scene, and urgent measures were taken to establish the circumstances of the incident.
The investigation established that the shooting was carried out by an Azerbaijani serviceman, who was subsequently detained.
Details of the incident were also communicated to the Azerbaijani side.
Armenia’s Investigative Committee has launched criminal proceedings in connection with the incident.
