A series of drone attacks hit the Russian capital and the Moscow region . Drones struck large Wildberries warehouses and other logistics facilities, and huge plumes of smoke were visible from various parts of Moscow.

What consequences does the destruction of such facilities already have for the Russian economy and the Kremlin’s ability to continue the war? “There’s a first important point here. It’s the economic consequences. If we estimate the damage caused by the first attack on Wildberries warehouses, it’s somewhere around a billion dollars. This is an estimate of the value of the warehouses themselves and the goods stored there.

What is a billion dollars for Russia? That’s two or three days of war today, and that’s a significant amount.

It’s also important to understand who lost this money. For Wildberries itself, this represents about 7% of its warehouse space. 7% was destroyed, 93% is operational, so it’s not critical. Today’s impact, although I haven’t seen any estimates yet, could add another 7%. At some point, this could become critical for a leading company like Wildberries”, says military expert Oleksiy Melnyk, co-director of the foreign policy and international security programs at the Razumkov Center in Kyiv. He adds that the second category that suffered losses were small and medium-sized businesses in Russia. For them, this blow was extremely painful. Many of them, and there is video evidence of this, woke up practically this morning in bankruptcy.

They won’t receive any compensation from the state. What Wildberries is currently considering to preserve its image isn’t immediate compensation, but rather some kind of benefits and loans. This is unlikely to save their customers or their business.

On the scale of Russia, this is only three days of war, although that’s still a lot. Each day of war is the budget of one small region. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not much. But if you break it down, especially for small and medium-sized businesses, the consequences are catastrophic for many.

That’s the economic aspect. But, in my opinion, the psychological effect is far more important. They say Ukrainian drones are passing through unhindered. That’s probably a huge exaggeration. Because out of 400 drones, at best, 10 percent make it through. This pales in comparison to Russia’s capabilities, when a day ago, a ballistic missile was flying at Kyiv almost every minute for 40 minutes: 40 ballistic missiles for 40 minutes. Of these, the interception rate was no more than 20%.

In terms of military capabilities, Russia still retains this advantage. The difference is that Russia is able to achieve its objectives virtually unhindered. The damage from this destruction and the loss of life are enormous. But the effect on Ukrainian society, which has not exactly become accustomed to, but has somehow adapted to, over the past five years of war, is different.

Each time this blow is painful for Ukrainians, but it doesn’t have any kind of game-changing effect. It all happened, it all still happens. And we are somewhat psychologically prepared for it to continue. Russians are now facing, or are facing, a moment of truth. War has come to Moscow, permanently and sustainably. This psychological impact on Ukrainian society and its impact on the Russian population cannot be compared. Expert says that besides businesses, ordinary citizens who ordered cheap goods on a marketplace and never received them have also suffered.

And this boiler, with its lid tightly sealed, is gradually building up pressure. It’s possible, as has happened many times in Russian history, if we recall the famous battleship Potemkin, when the sailors ate borscht and nothing foreshadowed trouble. This spontaneous, merciless explosion could occur at any moment and at any point. And then the Russian authorities will face another test.
