An estimated 2,600 girls living in the Netherlands face a heightened risk of being subjected to female genital mutilation during summer trips to their families’ countries of origin.
The practice is illegal under Dutch law even when carried out abroad, but specialists warn that stronger safeguards are urgently needed for girls from communities where it remains widespread, including families with roots in Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, Mali and Egypt.
Female genital mutilation has no medical justification and is not required by Islam, Christianity or any other religion. Experts say it is driven by longstanding cultural traditions, family pressure and beliefs surrounding virginity and marriage.
Researcher Annemarie Middelburg is calling for the Netherlands to adopt elements of the British system, where family courts can issue protection orders, confiscate passports, prevent a child from leaving the country and restrict contact with relatives. Breaching such an order can result in up to five years in prison.
Experts warn that teachers, doctors and family friends should treat conversations about gifts, large celebrations or “becoming a woman” before an overseas trip as possible warning signs.
Middelburg said professionals in the Netherlands often notice the signals but do not know how to respond.
