Vance said Iran agreed to allow international nuclear inspectors back into the country, calling it a significant step toward ending Iran’s nuclear weapons ambitions.
“The Iranians have agreed to invite IAEA inspectors back into their country. That is a major milestone for the American people and the first step in permanently denuclearizing or permanently ending a nuclear weapons program in Iran, and that’s exactly what we wanted to do. That’s exactly what we asked to happen,” Vance said.
President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that “Everybody is fully aware that Iran will agree to have Major Weapons Inspections in order to ensure ‘Nuclear Honesty’ long into the future,” but Iran had not confirmed that inspectors would be allowed into the country to monitor its nuclear program as of Monday afternoon.
Inspections were a key part of the nuclear deal the Obama administration signed with Iran, but they began to fade after the first Trump administration withdrew from the agreement. Vance also said the talks produced a “mechanism” aimed at keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, including coordination to address mines in the waterway.
“We also wanted to make sure that we actually set up the coordination mechanism so that we could demine the Straits of Hormuz so that when there are the conflicts that inevitably come up we can make sure we work through them rather than that leading to escalation,” Vance said.
The Treasury Department temporarily lifted sanctions on Iranian oil Monday, providing at least 60 days of relief. The move is expected to bring significant financial benefit to Iran, and oil prices continued to fall as more oil is expected to reach the global market.
Critics have argued the terms of a U.S.-Iran deal are too favorable to Iran, and some members of Congress have said they should be briefed.
