𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗱 | 𝗣𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗱
BLUF: Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) drone strikes have suspended traffic on the Chonhar bridges between Crimea and the occupied Kherson region. Russian forces deployed a pontoon crossing that was pre-positioned at the site.
Strike sequence:
• Night of 6-7 June: drone strikes hit the central span of the Chonhar Bridge. Occupation authorities suspended traffic, then partially restored it with alternating one-way movement. Possible timeframe of pontoon bridge deployment.
• 9 June: a repeat strike, attributed to an FP-2 drone of the 1st Separate Assault Regiment, forced full suspension. Traffic was directed to alternate routes through Armiansk and Perekop.
• 10 June: occupation authorities closed the Henichesk to Arabat Spit bridge, the second crossing shut in four days.
Planet Labs imagery published by Schemes (Radio Liberty) shows impact scarring on the main section and the pontoon bridge deployed alongside.
Schemes’ review of historical imagery shows the pontoon first appeared at Chonhar in June 2023 and was subsequently concealed under the main span.
The pontoon carries a fraction of the fixed span’s throughput, cannot sustain heavy loads, and is itself targetable.
With Chonhar degraded, Arabat closed, and traffic rerouted through Armiansk, supply for the RF southern grouping and Crimea is concentrating onto fewer, longer, and more observable | targetable routes.
Whether or not the main artery, the Kerch Bridge, is on the list for near-future targeting is yet to be seen.
