Russia collusion origins
share.google/aimode/0TD4XqPr…
AI Overview:
The origins of the Russia collusion investigations trace back to May 2016, when Trump campaign advisor George Papadopoulos told an Australian diplomat in London that Russia possessed damaging political information about Hillary Clinton. When WikiLeaks subsequently released hacked DNC emails in July, the Australian government alerted the FBI, launching the bureau’s counterintelligence investigation. [1, 2, 3]
Following are the foundational events that shaped the Russia-Trump investigations:
Key Origins and EventsThe Papadopoulos Tip: The initial spark for the FBI’s counterintelligence probe (codenamed “Crossfire Hurricane”) was the casual revelation by George Papadopoulos to Australian diplomat Alexander Downer.
The Steele Dossier: In the summer of 2016, the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee (via the law firm Perkins Coie) hired the firm Fusion GPS to conduct opposition research on Donald Trump. Fusion GPS hired former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele to investigate. The resulting dossier alleged financial and personal ties between the Trump campaign and the Russian government, and was later heavily utilized by the FBI to obtain FISA warrants.
Trump Tower Meeting: In June 2016, Donald Trump Jr., Paul Manafort, and Jared Kushner met with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower after being promised damaging information on Hillary Clinton. [9]Subsequent Investigations and Findings
The Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA): In January 2017, U.S. intelligence agencies formally concluded that the Russian government, under the direction of Vladimir Putin, conducted a sweeping influence campaign to interfere in the 2016 election and harm Hillary Clinton’s candidacy.
The Mueller Report (2019): Special Counsel Robert Mueller took over the investigation. The report documented extensive Russian interference efforts and numerous contacts between Trump associates and Russian operatives. However, it concluded that the evidence was not sufficient to establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.
The Durham Report (2023): A subsequent investigation led by U.S. Attorney John Durham to review the FBI’s original handling of the Russia probe concluded that the FBI failed to uphold its strict standards of analytical rigor in evaluating the Steele Dossier.
