Professor Steven Starr briefed the UN’s disarmament committee on nuclear winter in 2010, and today he fears an Israeli nuclear strike on Iran more than anything else on the board.

Israel holds a large arsenal on missiles and submarines, and he thinks a prime minister who faces jail if he leaves office could act irrationally.

Asked whether Iran’s thousands of conventional missiles are deterrent enough, his answer was that he hopes so, and then he brought up the Samson option.

He also notes the worst fallout from a strike on Iran would mostly stay inside Iran, which he reads as one less reason for Israel to hesitate.

He doubts Iran’s launchers could be knocked out, possibly at first but not for long, because a quarter mile of granite survives even a nuclear blast, and he ends that thought with “I don’t know.

I hope we don’t find out.”

The bigger war is the one his slides model.

A US and Russia exchange would loft enough soot to block the sun for years, crops would fail across the Northern Hemisphere, and most people in those countries would die.

He says the heads of nuclear states have never publicly raised it, and a general at the UN once told him he’d never heard any of it.
