Putin: +1,301 km² in September. ISW: -81 km².

At the Valdai Club on October 1, Putin claimed Russian forces captured 1,301 km² during September.

The Institute for the Study of War’s geolocated assessment paints a very different picture:
• Russia gained 175.54 km²
• Ukraine liberated 256.35 km²
• Net result: Russia -80.81 km²
ISW argues the gap is so large that it raises a bigger question: Is the Kremlin knowingly inflating the numbers, or is the leadership receiving reports filtered through a system where bad news rarely travels upward?

Since March, Russian territorial gains have reportedly slowed and at times reversed. Ukraine is assessed to have regained a net 293.59 km² between March and September, much of it during Operation Vivaldi.

Biletskyi claimed 176 km² were liberated in that operation. Zelenskyy said more than 5,000 Russian troops were killed or wounded, with 250 captured.

The difference between +1,301 km² and -81 km² is not a rounding error.

It’s the distance between propaganda and the battlefield.

Russian forces have begun using Iranian-made Misagh-2 man-portable surface-to-air missile systems to intercept Ukrainian unmanned aircraft, based on Ukrainian military reporting and imagery showing the systems in use. It is possible that Russia is using the Iranian systems because they are cheaper, or because of shortages of similar air-defense systems in Russia. Misagh-2 uses a passive infrared seeker and is designed as a fire-and-forget weapon. Once launched, the missile can track the target’s infrared signature without further guidance from the operator, allowing the operators to quickly leave their position.
