Dead calves keep washing up around Peninsula Valdes, where southern right whales come to give birth, and scientists who’ve watched this population for 23 years say it’s highly unusual.

Teams have been racing along the coast with boats, planes, and drones, collecting samples from the bodies before they rot to work out what’s killing them.

So far, the main suspect is seagulls. They peck at whales coming up for air, and while adults learn to keep their backs underwater, the babies can’t, leaving wounds where bacteria get in.

Researchers think warmer seas could be playing a part in making those bacteria deadlier, but they’re still testing.

These whales were nearly hunted to extinction, and losses like this could slow their comeback.
