The U.S just put the future of warfare in the hands of Elon Musk.
The Pentagon appointed the tech billionaire to co-lead ”Project Meridian,” which will map out the future of AI and autonomous military warfare in the country.
Experts say the move is deeply problematic, as Musk has significant conflicts of interest. SpaceX holds a plethora of Pentagon contracts.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth officially launched “Project Meridian” during his State of the Force address, appointing SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Anduril Industries founder Palmer Luckey, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to co-lead the 120-day task force.
Under the oversight of Pentagon technology chief Emil Michael, the group is tasked with determining how emerging technologies—including artificial intelligence, autonomy, directed energy, robotics, and biotechnology—will redefine global conflict. The initiative is designed to bypass traditional “creative limitations” to discover and field cutting-edge weapons systems that will shape U.S. combat readiness decades from now, culminating in a public report and a classified annex.
However, the high-profile appointments have immediately ignited intense scrutiny regarding potential conflicts of interest.
Both Musk and Luckey command private tech empires that hold multibillion-dollar active contracts with the federal government, raising ethical questions about defense contractors influencing the Pentagon’s future spending priorities.
Critics argue that placing major political donors and tech monopolists at the helm of military AI research blurs the line between public interest and corporate profit, reinforcing the influence of the modern military-industrial complex.

Capt. Smit Machchhar, recovering in an Abu Dhabi hospital, told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a televised video call on Oct. 2 that he knew he had to get back on his feet to save his passengers.
“I had so many wounds. I had fallen down,” Machchhar said from the hospital, his head bandaged and tubes in his nose, before breaking down as he recalled the attack. “I was fighting for my life. At one point, I realized that if I didn’t get up … then passengers would lose their lives.”
Machchhar, who is from Mumbai, was seriously injured in Wednesday’s attack but managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers to enter and restrain the attacker as the Boeing 737 descended sharply, witnesses and Israeli authorities said. He has been hailed as a hero, with world leaders saying he helped avert a disaster.
