The 27-year-old worked at Irkutsk’s anti-plague institute and reportedly told doctors she cracked a tube of live bacteria while collecting samples, then died on a ventilator with severe pneumonia, which local media describe as the lung form of plague that can spread person to person.
A hospital is under quarantine, public events are canceled and police have opened a criminal case, though the governor says every contact has tested negative so far.
Plague is treatable with antibiotics when caught early, so the next few days of test results matter more than the panic, but one dropped tube inside a lab built to contain exactly this germ is the kind of failure that should never happen.
