PM Sánchez is reportedly considering calling a general election for November 29 if his government suffers a major parliamentary defeat on its new housing package.
Spain’s right-wing Catalan separatist party (Junts) has announced it will oppose both decrees, denying Sánchez the votes he needs to get them through parliament.
The measures would extend eviction protections, regulate seasonal rentals, and prolong existing rental contracts.
A separate decree would make many leases effectively open-ended.
Piling more restrictions onto landlords risks doing the opposite of what Spain desperately needs: discouraging investment and pushing even more homes out of the long-term rental market.
Now the government may be willing to send the entire country back to the polls over it…
